FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
A Powerful Story of Loss, Resilience, and Community Emerges in The Bullying of Emily McCarty by Arnold Burry
Canada – May 4, 2026 – Arnold Burry’s debut novel, The Bullying of Emily McCarty, delivers a deeply emotional narrative in a small fishing village in Newfoundland and Labrador. Through a compelling blend of personal tragedy and community struggle, the book examines how grief, stigma, and resilience shape a young girl’s life.
The story begins with a devastating loss. Emily McCarty enters the world under tragic circumstances when her mother dies during childbirth, leaving her father emotionally shattered. Unable to cope with his grief, he spirals into mental instability and is eventually institutionalized, leaving Emily to be raised by extended family. This early trauma defines her place in the village and marks the beginning of her hardships.
As she grows, she becomes the target of relentless bullying, fueled by the stigma surrounding her father’s condition. The isolation and cruelty she endures intensify over time, reflecting the darker side of close-knit communities where difference is often misunderstood. The novel portrays these experiences with unflinching realism, offering insight into the emotional toll of sustained abuse.
Amid these struggles, the story introduces figures within the community who attempt to provide guidance and protection. However, tensions escalate dramatically when a confrontation with a local bully leads to violence, further destabilizing the fragile social fabric of the village.
The narrative reaches a critical turning point when a powerful storm descends upon the region, placing multiple lives in danger. The storm serves as both a literal and symbolic force, testing the strength, morality, and unity of the community. A dramatic rescue effort takes place, raising urgent questions about survival, accountability, and human compassion.
Drawing from his upbringing in Newfoundland, Arnold Burry brings authenticity and depth to the story’s setting and characters. His background in storytelling, shaped by the oral traditions of coastal life, is evident throughout the novel.
The Bullying of Emily McCarty is a work of fiction intended for a broad audience, from teens to adults, offering a poignant exploration of adversity, endurance, and the complexities of human behavior.
